Science Action in Lapwai
Lots of science activities were developed and carried out at Lapwai Elementary School this fall semester. Scientists and graduate Fellows Chad Ebert and Peter Oswald worked with their teaching partners D'Lisa Pinkham and Kelly Hillman to bring great hands-on science lessons to the Lapwai 5th grade students.
Below are just a few of the many pictures D'Lisa took during the fall 2006 semester. Captions below the pictures describe the action.

Throughout the year a special "wall of science" is added to and changed as different topics are presented.
Chad demonstrates some super cool science by dropping a small chunk of dry ice into a graduated cylinder filled with soapy water.

Bubbles burst forth from the graduated cylinder after adding dry ice.

More super cool science with Chad showing the students what happens when you dip a flower into liquid nitrogen.

Chad and Peter make liquid nitrogen ice cream as the students wait in anticipation to try the green concoction.

Science lessons have serious learning going on too. Here students use their science notebooks to record information from an investigation.

During a unit on simple machines, Chad brought a pulley system built by two other Fellows down to Lapwai. With the pulley system the student is able to easily raise himself up.

Here another student is able to pull herself up using the pulleys.

This is Chad with his group of 5th grade students posing for an informal picture.
